…but don’t overdo it

Don’t be a nerd. - or rather: be a nerd but don’t bore people with it. There is other stuff to know and do other than EU policymaking to advance your campaign. I know people that know everything about how the EU institutions work together, who can talk at length about the type of decisions they can take or the relevance of each policy file, etc.

Yet, they fail to see that lobbying is more than just that. It is also communication, networking, and opportunities. As I wrote earlier, Advocacy=Policy+Communications.

Learn how to craft compelling narratives

Now on to Communications. This is a handy skill that will help you greatly.

Your clients or employer have an objective. It could be for legislation to limit the use of a certain product, forbid a certain practice, or encourage a particular innovation. But that’s very bland, and you can’t go to policymakers and tell them that if they agree to what you ask, you’ll make your employer or client happy.

No. You have to appeal to your interlocutor. Craft a narrative that they will believe in and help you achieve.
